Geospatial Analysis of Abandoned Lands Based on Agroecosystems: The Distribution and Land Suitability for Agricultural Land Development in Indonesia

The Indonesian land area is 191.1 million ha, part of which abandoned in various agroecosystems that have the potential for expanding agricultural area. purpose this research was to geospatially analyze based on its agroecosystem at national and district levels, as well evaluate suitability development. methods included: (1) geospatial analysis cover map a scale 1:250,000 combined with soil climate information identify examine agroecosystem, (2) selecting representative districts each visual interpretation using high-resolution imagery, i.e., SPOT 6/7, (3) assessing development (4) predicting suitability. essential finding identification around 42.6 ha Indonesia distributed over six agroecosystems, widest being dry lowland wet climates. Then, 54 were selected characterize by 6/7 imagery interpreted visually. It found covered approximately 16.9 ha. distribution from satellite smaller than due differences use ancillary data. should be carried out all regions accurately properties. However, it requires large amount time, cost, facilities complete inventory. imageries data identified 27.7 suitable largest lowlands climate, especially Papua, Kalimantan, Sumatra islands. differed scale, 11.2 8.5 1:50,000, respectively. expansion food crops, particularly paddy fields, only 2.2 located mineral swamp land, predominantly inadequate accessibility.
